Many years ago pirates found the island of Mauritius the perfect place to live. They found the lonely beaches were ideal for hiding and resting after an attack. |
Drinking in the galley
Life at sea was never easy, whether you were a sailor or a pirate. The ship’s quarters (living areas) were dark, crowded and smelt of dirty water, tar and sweaty and unwashed bodies, and were often shared with livestock and the ever-present rats and other vermin. |

Sometimes pirates went ashore to bury or hide their treasure. |
